Holodomor Awareness Month: Remembering a Dark Chapter in History

The year, 2023, marks the 90th Anniversary of the Holodomor, a man-made famine that devastated Ukraine in 1932-1933. To honor the memory of the millions who suffered and perished during this tragedy, the Holodomor90 campaign has declared November 2023 as “Holodomor Awareness Month.” In this blog post, we’ll delve into the significance of this declaration and what it means for the ongoing efforts to recognize and remember the Holodomor.

What is Holodomor90?

Holodomor90 is an anti-genocide campaign dedicated to raising awareness and commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the “Holodomor,” which is a Ukrainian word meaning, “death by starvation.” This devastating man-made famine, perpetrated by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians between 1932 and 1933.

Why Holodomor Awareness Month?

Remembering the Past

Holodomor Awareness Month serves as a poignant reminder of the atrocities committed during the Holodomor. By designating November 2023, as this special month, the campaign aims to ensure that the memory of this tragic event remains alive, preventing its recurrence in the future.

Raising Global Awareness

Through various actions and initiatives, Holodomor90 seeks to raise global awareness about the Holodomor, fostering international recognition of it as an act of genocide. Increased awareness can lead to greater understanding and the prevention of future genocides.

Honoring the Victims

By dedicating an entire month to commemorate the Holodomor, Holodomor90 pays homage to the victims and their descendants. It acknowledges the suffering and loss while working towards justice for the millions who perished. While many survivors have now passed on, it is up to descendants to carry the light into the future.

Promoting Anti-Genocide Actions

Holodomor Awareness Month encourages individuals and organizations to take anti-genocide actions. These actions can range from adopting the Holodomor90 brand in public presence to participating in candlelight vigils on Holodomor Awareness Day, November 25, 2023.

How Can You Get Involved?

Join as a Partner

Anyone sharing the desire to eradicate genocide is invited to join Holodomor90 as a partner. There are no specific requirements, but partners are encouraged to take anti-genocide actions during Holodomor Awareness Month.

Participate in the Campaign

Partners can participate in various ways, including adopting the Holodomor90 brand, organizing candlelight vigils, hosting events, and supporting awareness and recognition efforts within their communities.

Host a Holodomor Memorial Day Vigil

On November 25, 2023, communities around the world will come together for candlelight vigils to commemorate the Holodomor. You can find local Holodomor events near you or even consider hosting one yourself.

Donations During “Holodomor Awareness Month”

Many official Holodomor90 campaign partners accept donations. Additionally, the campaign provides recommendations for charitable organizations supporting Holodomor awareness and anti-genocide efforts.

Holodomor Awareness Month in November 2023 serves as a significant moment for the global community to remember the Holodomor, raise awareness about this dark chapter in history, and take action against genocide. By participating in the Holodomor90 campaign, individuals and organizations can contribute to a world where such atrocities are never repeated.

As we reflect on the 90th Anniversary of the Holodomor, let us remember the victims, honor their memory, and work tirelessly to ensure that their suffering is never forgotten. Together, we can shine a light on this dark history and pave the way for a more just and compassionate future.
